Phishing

Phishing is a type of internet fraud seeking access to users’ confidential data (logins and passwords). Phishing usually involves sending out emails or instant messages claiming to be from commonly known services, brands or companies (for example, banks). Emails lure users into performing an action – for example, opening a link to visit a website. The website usually looks exactly like the website of the organization or service in question. Fraudulent websites can be recognized by their domain names. For example, a website imitating PayPal may have a name like “PayPal-Notifications.” One of the most notorious phishing cases on Runet involved the domain name yanclex.ru. Malefactors tried to exploit the visual similarity between the letter “d” and the combination of letters “cl.” Phishing relies on social engineering; therefore, technology to counter this threat may not be efficient enough.
